Chapter 16: Text Complexity
CCS Anchor Standard 10
What is it?
Read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
The focus is on…
The ability to read and comprehend complex literary and informational texts independently and proficiently.
What are complex texts?
Complex Literary Text
Include use of ambiguous language in literary devices, complex and subtle interactions among characters, challenging vocabulary, and vague messages and meanings within the text.
Complex Informational Text
Include a large amount of data, present vague/difficult concepts, and use higher level of vocabulary.
How do the CCS build to CRR anchor standard 10?
End of 1st: students must be able to read grade appropriate complex texts.
2nd through 4th: are divided into grade bands (“staircase”)
1st stage (2nd and 4th grade): Students will need scaffolding to read and comprehend complex texts.
2nd stage (3rd and 5th grade): Students should be able to independently read and comprehend complex texts.
Three Dimensions of Text Complexity (s’more example)
Qualitative Dimension: Is the language academic or conversational? Literal or figurative?
Quantitative Dimension: Syntactic complexity, sentence structure, and word length.
Reader and task considerations: Refers to student’s abilities, experiences, interests, and motivation for reading.
Supporting Students Reading Below Text Complexity Expectation
A student’s ability to read complex texts does not always develop in a linear fashion.
Additional support is needed for students that read well above and well below grade-band level.
Most students need scaffold instruction to master higher levels of text complexity.
