Tales from Miss Harvey
"Oh Boy!" Moments
ABOUT ME
Hello avid readers:
I am an aspiring Elementary Education major currently in my junior year of study. I have chosen to let my college name remain anonymous as the conjoining elementary school referred to in my blog is known nationwide. In order to protect the students and teachers at this school, all student names, school names, etc. are pseudonyms in order to ensure confidentiality. In this blog I will be writing about my experiences in my classes (found in the above tabs), specifically at "The Learning Academy-" a pen name used for my hands-on classroom experience being conducted this semester. "The Learning Academy" is a private school in which students from the second through the sixth grade are able to attend in order to learn skills to better assist them through their educational journey with dyslexia.
One of the many questions educators face on a daily basis is, “Why would you want to undergo the many challenges of teaching?” Many people assume that teaching is an unrewarding, underpaid job that people subject themselves to because they never figured out what they wanted to be when they grew up. Though people have the latter assumption correct, they have never seen the benefits of teaching first-hand. They have never seen the “light bulb shine” in the eyes of their students when they finally understand a concept they have been trying to master for weeks. They have never been a child’s guiding hand when the student has no one else to turn to. When one becomes a teacher, it is because they are prepared for the countless hours of work needed to ensure that their students receive the best education that they deserve. Teachers KNOW what their calling is, and I have known mine since elementary school. I was always the student that needed the extra one-on-one assistance- the extra guiding hand. I did not form into the cookie cutter shape that the educational system had planned for me. Instead, I had teachers that provided for my diversity. The teachers that have entered my life have never failed me, and just like them, I never want to let my students down. I know what it is like to feel behind in every subject and to feel like I have to study twice as hard as someone else just to receive the same grade. I want to be the light at the end of the tunnel for my students. I want to help them along in the same fashion my teachers did for me. I have the honor of changing lives.
I am looking forward to all of the knowledge, experience, and growth to be had this semester and beyond. I have high hopes for the future, and hope that you all will continue reading about my experiences, advice, and tall tales that is to be had in my journey. The hearts I have the chance to daily touch are the hearts of the next generation. The start of a changing world begins with teaching- the change resides with me.
Thank you.
With my warmest regards,
~Miss Harvey
